Parent Intervention Activities for Improving Students' Learning Paths For 21st Century: What Every Parent Must Know For the 21st Century

Parent-U-Turn
Activities:
1. Literacy strategies for mathematics, such as parents learning how to effectively ask students engaging questions, using graphic organizers and problem-solving skills to support student learning in school. Parents will participate in activities such as:
· How to ask students the right questions for math homework
· How to use graphic organizers to assist students in thinking about math problems
· How to use family math to get involved with school mathematics.
2. Literacy strategies for language arts, such a parents learning how to read pictures as text in books, reading graphs, using higher level questioning skills and ways to engage in dialogue with their children and schools. Parents will participate in activities like:
· Using language arts/social studies textbook and the strategy “Say, Mean, Matter” to extract meaning from textbook illustrations, charts and resources.
· How to organize family field trips to engage students more deeply with the curriculum
3. Strategies in working with teachers to advocate student needs such as:
· Parent will participate in role playing to build new models of how to effectively work with teachers to meet the needs of students
· Parents will create a parent-student management folder to establish a student needs profile and solution-based strategies for their student.
4. Strategies of how to look at student’s work such as:
· Parents will use a rubric to understand better what is standard-based homework
5. Strategies of accessing community resources to meet students' academic needs, such as:
· Participants will identify resources in the surrounding community that can support academic achievement in their children's schools.
6. Strategies to assist parents in how to engage in “daily check-ins" within their child's school, such as:
· Parents will participate in dialogues about the emotional and social development for their children.
· Parents will discuss case study stories about how to assist their children in making good decisions
· Parents will participate in dialogue about the challenge of how to “stay connected” to their chldren.
